Our Most Adventurous Wine Club Trip: The Wine Safari to Argentina

by Emily Anderson

Our most adventurous—and most memorable—wine club trip was our “Wine Safari” to Argentina. We began in the Old World elegance of Buenos Aires before heading west toward the Andes Mountains, exploring the remarkable wine regions of Salta and Mendoza. Along the way, we experienced distinctive regional cuisine, world-class wines, and some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.

In Salta province, we ventured deep into the high desert in off-road vehicles, making our way to the charming town of Molinos. There, we stayed at an incredible traditional hacienda nestled in the Andean foothills—an estate dating back to the 18th century that once served as the home of the last royal governor.

One of the highlights of our journey was visiting Bodega Colomé, the oldest winery in Argentina. We were also treated to a guided tour of the James Turrell Museum, located on the winery's grounds—an unexpected and unforgettable artistic experience in the middle of the Andes.

Our route took us along rough, unpaved roads through the Calchaquí River Valley, as we crossed the surreal landscape of the Quebrada de las Flechas. This natural monument features eroded cliffs and jagged rock formations that rise at dramatic angles, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

We even encountered flash floods and drove through rivers—true off-road adventure! Each evening, we returned to the comfort of our hacienda, where we relaxed with exquisite dinners paired with exceptional local wines.
